Practicalities
Gabrovo's tourist office , on pl. Vazrazhdane, near the Aprilov school (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel & fax 066/28483, did@globcom.net ), offers a whole range of advice on surrounding attractions and can book rooms and pensions in Bozhentsi, Etara and other nearby villages - including Uzana, a small mountain resort 23km southwest. Staff do not speak English, however. Further south, at ul. Raicho Karolev 4, is the Stara Planina Tourist Association (tel 066/29161) which can provide information (in English) on the wider area. Accommodation in central Gabrovo is limited to the high-rise, three-star Hotel Balkan , ul. Emanil Manolov 14 (tel 066/23474; US$18-36), which has prim doubles with bath and cable TV, with breakfast included. Alternatively, you could try the more modern Gabrovo , located around 4km south, on the way to Etar (tel 066/46005, fax 46025; US$18-36), which also has roomy apartments (US$36-60). For eating , the Stranopriemnitsa Inn , on ul. Opalchenska, serves traditional Bulgarian food in an attractive galleried courtyard, and sometimes features live folk music. The Cherven krast , located behind a big white building with a red cross on it just over the bridge from the Aprilov School, has excellent food and service and a big summer garden complete with children's play area. At the eastern end of the Igoto Bridge, Pizza Tempo is a fairly standard Italian restaurant, while on the opposite side is Racho Kovacha , a small restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river serving sandwiches and other snacks. Numerous pavement cafes bring Gabrovo to life during the summer months, especially in the tree-shaded environs of pl. Vazrazhdane.
