Practicalities
Lovech's train and bus stations sit next door to each other on high ground west of the town centre (tickets for express buses to Sofia are sold from booths in the train station forecourt); from here a five-minute walk down ul. Zacho Shishkov will bring you towards the main ul. Targovska. There's a tiny tourist office on the covered bridge (irregular hours, tel 068/20222), which has a few maps and brochures, as well as details of local excursions, including to the Devetazhkata cave , 18km to the northeast of town, where a rich assortment of archeological artefacts have been found, indicating human occupation as far back as the Paleolithic era. Accommodation is limited to three central hotels: the most luxurious choice is the modern, comfortable but overpriced three-star Lovech (tel 068/24716 or 24717; US$90-120) on ul. Targovska in the modern town; alternatively, there's the friendly, family-run Orbita on pl. Todor Kirkov, on the other side of the river (tel 068/23813, fax 44917, tsariana@mbox.digsys.bg ; US$36-60), or the rather dingy Varosha nearby (tel 068/25950; US$18-36). The Varosha mehana on ul. Poplukanov has a lovely courtyard garden, surrounded by wooden balconies, and is one of the most pleasant places to eat and drink in old Lovech, with regular performances of traditional music in the evenings; just opposite is the Cafe Varosha , which offers a similar set-up and standard. One of Lovech's best restaurants is the Drakata , on pl. Todor Kirkov, whose balcony affords a splendid view of the river and the covered bridge. Cafes and snack bars are in plentiful supply around pl. Todor Kirkov, or along ul. Targovska in the new town. Cafe Versailles , at ul. Targovska 85, is the best place in town for cocktails, again, on a riverside terrace.
