Lying just off the main road and train routes, the towns of Lovech and Troyan are often missed out by those travelling east to west. However, they do sit on one of the important trans-Balkan routes linking Pleven, on the margins of the Danubian Plain, with the Valley of the Roses to the south. In terms of scenery or sheer excitement, this can't match crossing the more famous Shipka Pass, but there are compensations. Lusher and less craggy than the mountains further east, the landscape has its own attractions, and Troyan Monastery merits a visit as much as any of the other ecclesiastical treasures of the Stara Planina. The small settlements around Troyan make good bases from which to explore the mountains, and the range of accommodation now available in the villages makes them infinitely preferable to the towns for an overnight stay; the tourist office in Troyan can make bookings. Plenty of buses ply the Pleven-Lovech-Troyan route, and Lovech is also accessible by train , lying at the end of a branchline which leaves the main Sofia-Varna line at the otherwise unimportant town of Levski.
