Arrival, Information and Accommodation
Buses #1, #10 or #12 will take you from the train and bus stations in the east of the city, as far as the eastern end of the main drag, bul. Slavyanski. A ten-minute walk along this largely traffic-free street brings you, via pl. Osvobozhdenie which merges into pl. Balgariya, to pl. Oborishte, and the Aristour bureau on ul. Ikonomov 5 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 054/52509, fax 59031, aristour@mbyte.bg ), where you can get private rooms in centrally located apartments for about US$8 per person, though these disappear fast in summer. Cheapest of the city's hotels is the Orbita , 2km west of the centre in the leafy Kyoshkove park (tel 054/52398 or 58144; US$18-36), with run-down but clean ensuite doubles and triples. Moving up in price, the disappointing high-rise Madara , pl. Balgariya 1 (tel 054/57598; US$60-90), has ensuite rooms, cable TV and breakfast, but is surrounded by derelict buildings and ongoing construction work, and is only slightly cheaper than the far superior Hotel Shumen , pl. Oborishte 1 (tel 054/59141, fax 58009; US$60-90), which offers a similar deal but with much higher levels of cleanliness and service, and an indoor pool and sauna. Aristour also organizes trips to all the nearby historical sites, wine-tasting in Preslav, walking tours in the Shumen hills, and riding courses at the horse-breeding centre.
