A Bronze Age site at nearby Smyadovo yielded bone-carved idols of the fourth millennium BC, while the Thracian period is represented by silverware from two local burial sites, at Varbitsa and Branichevo, and a reconstructed war chariot. Also here are many of the best medieval artefacts from Pliska and Preslav, the cultural achievements of the latter revealed in the abstract floral patterns adorning the capitals of stone pillars, and in the delicacy of a tenth-century gold necklace.
