Practicalities
Despite its venerable history, modern Preslav is a grim place, offering few inducements to spend longer than an afternoon, and regular bus services to Shumen happily mean that you don't need to. If you do choose to stay, your best bet is to arrange a private room through Aristour back in Shumen; otherwise, the only available accommodation is at the filthy Hotel Preslav on the town square (tel 0538/2508; US$18-36), which is in a terrible state of repair. There are several cafes serving light snacks clustered around the bus station and the town square, but, frustratingly, finding anything more substantial to eat isn't easy - try the small unnamed restaurant at ul.Stamboliiski 88, behind the town square.
