Practicalities
Unless you have a car, getting to Pliska from Shumen is time-consuming, and only really worth the effort if you have a strong enthusiasm for First-Kingdom remains. Regular buses travel from Shumen to the industrial town of Novi Pazar, 8km southeast of Pliska, from where four daily buses make their way to the village itself; from here it's still a 30- or 40-minute walk. There's nowhere to eat or drink in Pliska, so bring your own supplies.
