To the right of the Madara Horseman, a path winds off towards the Large Cave ( Golyamata Peshtera ) beneath a giant overhang of rock. Beyond is a smaller cave, where flints, bones and pottery were discovered; while just above, you'll catch sight of the remnants of a fourteenth-century rock monastery , its crudely dug cells pitting the cliff face. Not far away you'll find the source of the River Madara where Thracian period plaques and statues honouring the rider-god, Dionysus, Cybele and three water nymphs have been discovered; and remains of an early medieval grain store where enormous clay vessels were sunk into the ground to keep cool.
