The northeastern fringe of the Balkan Range is distinguished by three archeological sites, all easily accessible from Shumen. The ruins of Pliska are less interesting to look at than read about, but enough remains of Preslav to justify a visit if your taste inclines towards hunky masonry. As for the so-called Madara Horseman , the rockscapes all around make up for the eroded face of this unique and ancient bas-relief. Fifteen kilometres northeast of the city, just beyond the village of Tsarev Brod, is the Kabiyuk horse-breeding and riding centre , founded by Ottoman governor Midhat Pasha in the 1860s to provide mounts for the Turkish army. Arabian, English thoroughbred and East Bulgarian (a cross-breed of domestic stock and both the former) horses are raised here, although if you want to view the stables and go on a short ride you'll have to arrange a visit through either Aristour or the Hotel Shumen .
