A lengthy processional stairway ascends towards Skobelev park , passing the city art gallery (Tues-Sat 9am-5pm; US$1) on the way. Inside are several more examples of Svetlin Rusev's work, and the inevitable idealized-peasant-girl canvas courtesy of Dimitrov-Maistor. At the top of the stairway is yet another Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship monument, followed by the gates of the park itself. The park is laid out on a hill formerly occupied by the Isa Aga Redoubt , the object of fierce fighting in 1877 and now restored and crowned with an obelisk commemorating the 405 troops who died capturing it. The Skobelev Museum (officially Tues-Sat 9am-noon & 2-4.30pm; US$1) at the centre of the park holds a small display of photos and documents relating to the Russian general, after whom the park is named, and the siege. Numerous cannons are secreted within the greenery hereabouts, but the main focus of visitors' attention is the Panorama (Tues-Sat 9am-noon & 1.30-5.30pm; US$2), an enormous concrete funnel of a building housing a huge depiction of the early days of the siege, comprising three-dimensional figures set against a circular backdrop. Downstairs, a smaller diorama shows the Turkish commander Osman Pasha retreating over a bridge in the wake of the victorious Russian assault.
