Arrival, Information and Accommodation
Pleven's bus and train stations are at the northern end of town; to get to the centre, follow ul. Danail Popov (or take any bus) south until you hit pl. Sveti Nikolai. From here, Osvobozhdenie continues a short way south to pl. Svobodata , which in turn opens on to the main square, pl. Vuzrazhdane . Most useful of the local travel agencies is Mizia, just off pl. Svobodata at Ivan Vazov 9 (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm; tel 064/801215, rostov@intercom.bg ), which organizes sightseeing trips of the city, runs excursions to places like Etara and Veliko Tarnovo, and can book you into private rooms , for around US$10 per person, though staff may be reluctant to do so if there's hotel space available. The most central of the city's three high-rises is the newly refurbished Interostov , just off pl. Svobodata at Slava Aleksiev 2 (tel 064/801095 or 801096; US$36-60), which offers a reasonable standard of comfort, including a pleasant courtyard restaurant. The slightly smarter, three-star Balkan , some 2km to the east of the centre at bul. Ruse 85 (tel 064/37021 or tel & fax 37023; US$36-60, but cheaper if booked in advance through Mizia), has neat and comfortable ensuite doubles with TV. The cheapest option is the rather grim Pleven , near the train and bus stations at pl. Republika 2 (tel 064/30181; US$18-36). If you're just passing through Pleven, there's a left-luggage office ( garderob ) in the train station (daily 6am-10pm, but with unpredictable lunch breaks), and another in the bus station (daily 7am-5pm). Internet access is available at the Computer Club , next door to the mausoleum on the city's main square.
