The Monastery of Sveta Bogoroditsa is at the northwestern end of town, its church presiding over a tranquil courtyard. The church itself (ring the bell in the porch and someone will open it for you) is unremarkable, a product of successive destructions and rebuildings, although it does contain an image of the Virgin renowned for answering the prayers of the sick. It attracts pilgrims throughout the year, with most arriving on the Feast of the Assumption ( Golyama Bogoroditsa ) on August 15, when the icon's power is at its greatest. To the west, another asphalt road descends towards the Monastery of Sveti Nikola , a predominantly modern-looking complex completely refurbished in the 1890s. There's not much to see here, but its tranquil atmosphere is worth savouring.
