The terrain north of Tarnovo is a wild confusion of massifs sundered by the River Yantra and its tributaries, abounding in rocky shelves rendered almost inaccessible by forests and torrents. Nearly twenty monasteries were established here during the Second Kingdom, and several survived the Turkish invasion. These formed a symbiotic relationship with the later towns and villages founded by refugees after the sack of Tarnovo. With a car it's feasible to visit the main sites within a day, but relying on public transport (or hiking), one expedition a day seems more realistic.
