North of Shumen, the low-lying Ludogorie hills separate the Balkan Range proper from the flatter terrain of the Danubian Plain and the Dobrudzha beyond. The region harbours a large Muslim population of Turkish and Tatar descent, although it's a predominantly rural area with few worthwhile urban centres. The main town, Razgrad , is of limited appeal, although quieter Isperih , further northeast, is the gateway to one of Bulgaria's most compelling off-the-beaten-track destinations, Sveshtari - famous for its Thracian tombs and the Muslim holy site of Demir Baba Tekke . Razgrad is served by plenty of intercity buses from Shumen and Ruse, as well as Ruse-Varna trains . Isperih is more tricky to get to, with less frequent buses departing from Ruse, Razgrad, Shumen, Dobrich and Varna. It also lies on a branch line which leaves the Ruse-Varna rail route at Samuil. Services along this route are sparse, but there is at least one through train from Sofia to Isperih a day.
