Northeast of Sevlievo lies one of the major white-wine-producing areas of Bulgaria, with low vineyard-cloaked hills feeding the wineries of towns like Suhindol and Pavlikeni . There are no real tourist centres here yet, save perhaps for the village of VISHOVGRAD , lying 15km north of the main Tarnovo-bound E7772 on a minor road which cuts across country to Pavlikeni. If you're travelling by public transport, you'll have to approach the village from the north, catching a train to Pavlikeni (on the main Sofia-Varna line) and picking up a Vishovgrad bus from outside the station - most departures are timed to coincide with the arrival of trains from the Sofia direction. The village itself offers rural peace, and the chance to walk the 6km southeast to the Emen Gorge , where a wooden walkway leads past rushing waters to a small lake and a waterfall. Back in the village, the family-run pension , the Dalbok Zimnik (book through Odysseia-in in Sofia; tel 02/989 0538; US$18-36) offers bed-and-breakfast and advice on local walks. The best time to be in Vishovgrad is on St Tryphon's Day ( Trifon Zarezan ) on February 14, when the ritual pruning of the vines is celebrated with much drinking and feasting.
