Travelling east by train, you completely bypass the foothills of the central Balkan Range northeast of Sofia. However, the main Sofia-Veliko Tarnovo-Varna highway (a gorge-defying dual carriageway for the first 60km or so) heads straight across the westernmost shoulder of the range, passing a handful of worthwhile villages and monasteries along the way. The market town of Teteven and nearby village of Ribaritsa are the most attractive of the region's settlements if you need a base from which to explore. Otherwise, most of the area's worthwhile sights are accessible by bus from Sofia, or Lovech to the east.
