Belgium is one of twelve European Union countries who have changed over to a single currency, the euro (). Euro notes and coins have been issued at the beginning of 2002, with Belgian francs having remained in place for cash transactions, at a fixed rate of F40.3399 to 1 euro, until the end of February 2002. Euro notes are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros, and coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros. Banks are the best places to change money. They are open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, some with a one-hour lunch break between noon and 2pm. You can also change money in larger cities at train stations, some hotels, and bureaux de change , though the rates are less favourable; you can obtain cash through ATMs in Brussels and elsewhere if you have an appropriate card with a PIN number.
