Across from the place du Musee, at rue Montagne de la Cour 2, the Old England building is a whimsical Art Nouveau confection, all glass and wrought-iron, that started life as a store, taking its name from the eponymous British company who had the place built as their Brussels headquarters in 1899. It has recently been refurbished to house Le Musee des Instruments de Musique , a prestige development with ninety musical themes - and 1500 instruments - displayed over four floors. It's all very glitzy, the special feature being the infra-red headphones which allow visitors to listen to scores of musical extracts from ancient Greece to the present day. There's a concert hall too - with regular performances on Thursday evenings - and a cafe on the top floor offering a great view over the city. One particular highlight of the museum is the section dedicated to Adolphe Sax, the Belgian-born inventor of the saxophone. Sax certainly had a vivid imagination - some of his wilder contraptions, like the oddly contorted saxhorn, are quite remarkable.
