One of the smallest of the city's communes , St Gilles is also one of the most varied, stretching from the impoverished, sometimes threatening streets round the Gare du Midi and Porte de Hal to the affluent precincts of avenue Louise. In the poorer quarters, generations of political and economic refugees from the Mediterranean and North Africa have established themselves. The easterly sections of St Gilles are much more relaxed - and relaxing - and it's here you'll find the district's architectural highlight, the Musee Victor Horta .
