From the big and hectic square that is the Porte de Namur , it's a couple of minutes' walk down the chaussee d'Ixelles to two oddly contrasting shopping malls. On the right hand side are the slick boutiques of the Galerie Toison d'Or , and on the left, almost opposite, is the rough-and-ready Galerie d'Ixelles , the shopping centre of the city's Central and North African community. Walk through the Galerie d'Ixelles and you'll soon reach the chaussee de Wavre . Here, you can turn right and then take the second right to reach the pedestrianised rue de Longue Vie , the social - and sociable - heart of the African quarter, thronged with small cheerful bars and cafes playing African music and serving cheap beer and traditional food. Close by, on rue de la Paix, is the imposing, Gothic pile of St Boniface . From the outside the church looks distressed and run down, but the cool interior boasts cathedral-like arches and immaculate stained-glass windows. Directly in front of the church lies the appealing rue St Boniface , home to a number of laid-back cafe-bars including the immensely popular L'Ultime Atome .
