The district of St Josse , immediately north of Le Botanique, is somewhere you'll probably want to go only at night, the main attraction being its numerous (and inexpensive) Turkish restaurants. It's a compelling, uncompromisingly foreign neighbourhood, where men while away the hours over glasses of tea in cafes and head-scarved women emerge during the day to shop. Dating from the 1840s, the vast, domed Eglise de Ste Marie , standing at the head of rue Royale, is the quarter's landmark, its clumping cupola rising high above its heavy-duty buttresses. However, life centres on chaussee de Haecht , joining rue Royale just beyond Le Botanique, packed with restaurants, snack bars and the odd shop selling fruit and veg, Turkish videos, and gimcrackery.
