Despite its limited opening hours, anyone with even a passing interest in Jugendstil architecture should make the effort to visit the Kirche am Steinhof (guided tours in German Sat 3pm; oS40/?2.91), completed in 1907 by Otto Wagner as a chapel for the city's main psychiatric hospital. The church occupies a fantastic site on the commanding heights of the Baumgartner Hohe; to get there, take bus #47A from Unter-St-Veit U-Bahn. Like the Karlskirche, the church is topped by a giant copper dome and lantern, both of which were originally gilded, and features two belfries capped with copper statues of seated saints. Inside, the church is deliberately organized on a north-south axis, rather than the usual east-west configuration, in order to allow more light through the glorious mosaic windows, designed by Kolo Moser. The focus of the interior is very much on the main altar, with its eye-catching, cage-like gilt baldachin, against a backdrop mosaic featuring St Leopold and sundry other saints. Sadly, the church is little used nowadays; it's too cold for services during the winter, and even in summer there are few takers amongst the patients.
