In the first decade of the nineteenth century, the wealthy banker Johann Heinrich Geymuller had a luxury summerhouse - known today as the Geymullerschlossl (March-Nov Thurs-Sun 10am-5pm; oS30/?2.18; www.mak.at ) - built in the sleepy village (now suburb) of Potzleinsdorf. The house is no standard Biedermeier residence, but is, in fact, an exotic mixture of Gothic and Moorish elements executed by an unknown architect. It now houses the MAK's collection of early nineteenth-century furniture, as well as temporary Biedermeier exhibitions, which are staged on the ground floor. The first-floor rooms house the collection of clocks bequeathed, along with the house in 1965, by Dr Franz Sobek. The clocks - fascinating though they are - are a sideshow to the overall effect of the painstakingly restored Biedermeier decor, the most startling of which is the Salon mit Panoramatapete, a drawing room equipped with period furniture made from ebony and gold and upholstered in deep blue, and dominated by the panoramic murals of idealized, Oriental landscapes. To get to the Geymullerschlossl, take tram #41 to its terminus from Volksoper U-Bahn.
