As its name suggests, Karntnerstrasse lies along the old road from Vienna to the southern Austrian province of Carinthia (Karntner), and beyond to the Adriatic. Widened in the nineteenth century, badly bombed in World War II and pedestrianized in the 1970s, it retains only a few reminders of the days when it was home to the city's luxury retail trade. Nevertheless, it's still a favourite street for promenading, and for window-shopping. As a whole the street has gone downmarket. One exception, however, is J. & L. Lobmeyr (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm), at no. 26, which, as well as flogging expensive glass and crystal, also houses an informal glass museum. The assistants are quite happy for you to wander through to the back of the shop, where you'll find the stairs that lead to the second-floor balcony. The wonderful, mostly antique, exhibits here include an incredible range of chandeliers, culminating in a copy of the 1960s chandelier that graces the New York Metropolitan Opera. Downstairs, in the shop itself, you'll see glassware sets still made to designs by Adolf Loos and Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstatte.
