The prime shopping streets of Graben and Kohlmarkt retain an air of exclusivity that Karntnerstrasse has lost. Their shops, many of which are preserved in aspic, as if the empire lives on, advertise branches in places such as Karlsbad, Leipzig and Prague. Others still sport the K.K. or k.u.k emblem - kaiserlich und koniglich (Imperial and Royal) - the Austrian equivalent of "By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen". In between these old-fashioned stores are several Art-Nouveau edifices and designer jewellers produced by the old man of modern Austrian architecture, Hans Hollein.
