If you've absolutely no interest in instruments of death, however beautifully crafted, you can skip the entire collection and head straight for the Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente . The Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol is again responsible for many of the rare pieces, such as the unique set of six sixteenth-century dragon-shaped shawms , in Saal X. The vertically strung clavicytherium , in Saal XI, richly inlaid with ivory, ebony, tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl, was actually played by the Emperor Leopold I, who was a musician and composer in his own right. Saal XII is loosely based around Josef Haydn, featuring instruments from his day, plus a quadruple music stand for a string quartet; the extraordinarily lifelike beeswax bust of the composer sports a wig of real human hair. The tortoiseshell violin , decorated with gold and ivory, in room XIII, was bought by Maria Theresia for the Schatzkammer, and, like many such showpieces, is totally unsuitable for playing. Also in this room is an early nineteenth-century glass harmonica of the variety invented by the American statesman Benjamin Franklin. Beyond the ornate Marmorsaal (Saal XIV) - still occasionally used as a concert venue - there are eye-catching exhibits in Saal XV that include a crystal flute , and a string instrument that doubles as a walking stick. An aluminium violin and a " dummy keyboard " - stringless, for silent practice - can be found in Saal XVI, and in the final room there's an entire late-nineteenth-century orchestra, as well as a grand piano designed by Theophil Hansen and given to the Emperor Franz-Josef for his wife, Elisabeth, to play.
