The Hofjagd- und Rustkammer boasts one of the world's finest assemblages of armour, mostly dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Chronologically, the collection begins on the stairs, where you can view two dog-snout-shaped visors - devised to replace the closed helmet, in which it was extraordinarily difficult to breathe - from the estate of Duke Ernst of Austria (1377-1424), who was responsible for starting the weaponry collection. There's a splendid array of jousting equipment, to the right of Saal I, made for the knights of Emperor Maximilian I, and a display of High Renaissance costume armour (Saal III), which was meant only for show, its design deliberately imitating the fashionable clothes of the time: puffy sleeves, decorative bands inlaid with gilded silver, and slightly comical pleated skirts. The museum's other great weaponry freak was the manic collector Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol (1525-95), who ordered the bank-breaking Adlergarnitur (eagle armour) in Saal V, with its exquisite gilded garniture. Saal VI features some great Turkish arms and armour, while yet more richly decorated suits of armour fill Saal VII, including the "rose-petal" garniture ordered by Maximilian II for the tournament held in Vienna in 1571 to celebrate his brother Karl's wedding; equally fancy suits were created for his two sons, Rudolf and Ernst. Last of all, there's some truly exquisite Milanese craftsmanship in Saal VIII, including a rapier whose hilt features numerous Moors' heads.
