Immediately visible from all points of arrival, and a brisk fifteen-minute walk from Werfen train station, the fortress of Hohenwerfen (April & Oct 9am-4.30pm; May, June & Sept 9am-5pm; July & Aug 9am-6pm; oS110/?8.03) dominates the village from a rocky outcrop to the north. Subjected to a cycle of sackings, fires and rebuildings, the fortress has changed immeasurably since Salzburg's Archbishop Gebhard von Felsenstein first fortified the spot as insurance against Bavarian incursions in the eleventh century. The obligatory guided tour (in German with English summary, frequency depends on demand) takes you from an impressive inner courtyard to the chapel, where Gothic fresco fragments depicting the Apocalypse are preserved, before passing through state rooms and a torture chamber to the belfry, which offers impressive views of the Salzach Valley and the encroaching craggy peaks. The small museum of falconry at the fortress entrance anticipates the bird-of-prey flying displays that take place on the knoll above (mid-July to mid-Aug at 11am, 2pm & 4pm; mid-Aug to Oct & April to mid-July at 11am & 3pm).
