Getting to the Eisriesenwelt is a scenic excursion in itself, involving a road and cable-car ascent to reach the cave entrance 1641m above the valley floor, and providing views back towards Werfen and the castle. A bus from Werfen train station (currently departing at 8.15am, 10.35am, 12.35pm & 2.35pm; oS70/?5.11 return; the driver sells a combined ticket covering bus, cable car and cave for oS270/?19.71) takes you uphill as far as the car park at the road's end (also accessible by private car) 5km above Werfen to the northeast; from there it's a ten-minute walk to the cable-car station (oS120/?8.76 return). The caves are only accessible by 75-minute guided tour (usually hourly, more frequently at peak periods; daily July & Aug 9.30am-4.30pm; May-June & Sept-Oct 9.30am-3.30pm; oS90/?6.57), which leads past some spectacular ice formations, diving through narrow passageways (involving some steep climbs) before emerging into breathtaking, imaginatively lit galleries. It's cold enough to warrant a sweater or jacket, so come prepared.
