Hourly buses from Zell am See head up the Glemmtal immediately to the north, where the twin villages of SAALBACH and HINTERGLEMM entertain winter-package tourists from the Netherlands, Germany and Britain. Skiing is good for beginners and intermediates throughout the valley, and both villages have plenty of bars and pubs catering to a wide range of tastes, although Saalbach is the rowdier of the two. A tourist office (tel 06541/7272, www.saalbach.com ) on Saalbach's main street will point you in the direction of private rooms and hotels if you want to stay. The 1794-metre Kohlmaiskopf on the mountain ridge north of Saalbach can be reached by gondola; and further up the valley to the west there's a cable car to the 1984-metre Zwolfer , most prominent of the peaks south of Hinterglemm.
