Regional train services, as well as buses from Badgastein, stop at KLAMMSTEIN at the entrance to the valley, where the Naturhohle (guided tours on the hour; Aug 10am-6pm; late March to July & Sept to mid-Oct 11am-3pm; closed Mon; oS110/?8.03) was once used by local Protestants for clandestine prayer. The chamber where they used to meet has been dubbed the Fledermaus-Dom , or bat cathedral. The cave entrance is off the main road to the east, about 45min by foot from the well-signposted car park. A visit to the hunting trophies and mineral display at the nearby sixteenth-century Burg Klammstein (45min tours at 2pm; Tues-Sun; oS45/?3.29) is less interesting, although kids might enjoy the Gespensterschau , or ghost show, a series of tableaux illustrating the spirits said to inhabit the nearby cave. Ten kilometres up the valley, the attractive and quiet village of DORFGASTEIN lacks the thermal springs that supply the settlements to the south, and consequently tourism here is relatively low-key. Things liven up slightly in the winter, due to the village's nascent reputation as a good snowboarding area. Above the village to the east, there's a two-stage lift (chairlift to the mid-station, then gondola) to the 2033m Fulseck, and in the village centre are a number of small Gasthofe and a tourist office (Mon-Fri 8-noon & 2-6pm, Sat 8-noon; tel 06433/7277) that has a list of private rooms (summer: oS400-600/?29.07-43.60; winter: oS600-800/?43.60-58.14).
