Established in 1971, the Hohe Tauern National Park was mapped out to protect the natural environment around the Hohe Tauern's highest peaks and to keep the building development below at bay. It embraces 1786 square kilometres and straddles the borders of the Salzburger Land, Carinthia and the Tyrol. Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner is within the park, as are the spectacular Krimml Falls. The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse forges a path straight through the area, but otherwise you're only likely to come across the park if you're out walking in the hills above the towns on its fringes - you'll usually encounter a small sign telling you that you're entering the park, accompanied by a short list of dos and don'ts, the most important of which are to stick to marked paths and take all your litter out with you. Among the wildlife encountered within the park are the elusive Gemse (chamois) and the ubiquitous Mummeltier (marmot). You're not supposed to feed these cute-looking beasts, although tourists invariably do. There are a few Hutte within the park boundaries catering for long-distance hikers. Tourist offices in Badgastein, Zell am See, Heiligenblut, Matrei, Kals and other centres bordering the park usually have a stock of leaflets detailing hiking routes, flora and fauna
