Four kilometres south of Badgastein, and an easy walk if you follow the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Promenade, which starts near the Stubnerkogel gondola station, the village of BOCKSTEIN was once a mining settlement devoted to the extraction of gold from the Radhausberg to the southeast. Tucked away on the western side of the village, Altbockstein was founded by eighteenth-century Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Sigismund von Schrattenbach as a model community for the workers, complete with tenement-like living quarters, village green, and quaint chapel on a knoll. All the buildings have been tastefully restored, and there's a small museum in one of the old storehouses (tel 06434/4253; mid-May to Sept daily except Mon 10-noon & 3-6pm; Oct to mid-May by appointment only; oS30/?2.19) displaying old mining equipment, ceremonial uniforms and a model of the Sackzug , the rudimentary means by which ore was transported to the valley bottom - sacks of the stuff were tied together and then sent down a wooden chute, with a miner riding on the first sack rather like the pilot of a bobsleigh. Bockstein's numerous private rooms can be booked through the tourist office in Badgastein. Of the handful of hotels , the Rader , Karl-Imhof-Ring 22 (tel 06434/2405; oS800-1000/?58.14-72.67), is well appointed, modern and near to the Altbockstein; and the Achenhaus , Bockstein 438 (tel 06434/3212; oS800-1000/?58.14-72.67), is a lovely, chalet-style pension with balconied rooms, a block west of the main road. The Gasthaus Radhausberg on the Altbockstein village green serves up excellent mid-priced Austrian food , and the Forellenhof is a good pizzeria on the road into the village from Badgastein. The Muhlrad , at the north end of Bockstein on the Badgastein road, is a wine and beer hall with substantial snack food and occasional live folk music.
