Main town of the Pongau , an area of lush alpine pastures that stretches from Bischofshofen in the north to the mouth of the Gasteinertal in the southwest, ST JOHANN has become one of Austria's most popular outdoor holiday centres. Together with Alpendorf , the hotel-filled village suburb 3km uphill to the southeast, it offers a wide range of sporting activities year-round, and it's these that constitute the main reason for being here. In wintertime, it's a much-favoured destination among European skiers (it features only intermittently in British package-holiday brochures). When the snow has melted, the slopes cater to an influx of walkers , while swimming and tennis are the summertime activities of choice in town.
