Midway between Bischofshofen and the Styrian ski resort of Schladming, RADSTADT was fortified by the archbishops of Salzburg in the sixteenth century to provide a bulwark against the Turks (who, in fact, never got this far) - partly moated walls punctuated by a series of impressive towers still encompass the town centre. With the Tauern ranged imperiously to the south, it's an undeniably pretty spot, and a popular base for winter sports, but unless you're in this part of Austria to ski it probably merits only a brief stop. The obvious thing to do on arrival is to take the fifteen-minute walk around the town walls. Marking the eastern gateway, the Kapuzinerturm (June-Sept Mon-Sat 9.30-11.30am & 2-4pm; oS35/?2.56) harbours a smallish display of medieval weaponry. West of here is the Romanesque Pfarrkirche , with wonderfully expressive postwar stained glass by Josef Wildmoser depicting scenes from the Life of the Virgin. Ten minutes' walk west of the centre, the Heimatmuseum in Schloss Lerchen (June to mid-Oct 10-noon & 3-5pm; late Dec to April 10-11.30am & 3-4.30pm; oS50/?3.65) has the usual collection of local costumes and crafts, as well as an exhibition on local geology.
