Eight kilometres south of Werfen, there's a parting of the ways at Bischofshofen, as one rail line heads westwards to St Johann im Pongau , Zell am See and the Tyrol, and the other turns eastwards towards Styria, running along the wide valley floor of the Ennstal with the magnificent ridge of the Niedere Tauern range rising to the south. Just short of the Styrian border lies Radstadt , an attractive historical town and skiing centre. The A10 autobahn also leaves the Salzach Valley near Bischofshofen, veering southeast across the western shoulder of the Niedere Tauern towards the Tauerntunnel and Carinthia. Minor roads just before the Carinthian border head into the upper Mur Valley in the far southeastern corner of the Salzburger Land, where pasture-covered hills shelter attractive villages such as Tamsweg , an alternative starting point for onward routes into Styria.
