Two blocks northwest of Platzl, the Makartplatz is presided over by Fischer von Erlach's Dreifaltigkeitskirche , or church of the Holy Trinity, notable for the graceful curve of its exterior and the oval plan of its dome, which boasts a crowd of vibrant paintings by Rottmayr. Much smaller than the same architect's Kollegienkirche, the church is a remarkably successful exercise in squeezing a structure of extreme delicacy and elegance into a restricted building space. Further along, the house at no. 8 is the site of Mozart-Wohnhaus (daily 9am-5.30pm; oS65/?4.72), where the Mozart family lived between 1773 and 1787. Though little of the original building survives, courtesy of allied bombing raids in World War II, the museum is a much better introduction to the composer's life and times than the Geburtshaus across the river, largely due to its modern, multimedia approach. Headsets deliver engrossing commentary together with well-chosen excerpts of music, a short video follows Mozart's journeys around Europe, and a small movie theatre screens documentaries on Mozart's career, to booming musical accompaniment. The well-labelled collection of period furniture, original manuscripts and eighteenth-century harpsichords won't disappoint the purists.
