A clutch of worthwhile sights on the southern fringes of the city are easily reached on the municipal bus network. Most important of these are the palace, gardens and zoo at Schloss Hellbrunn , 5km south of the Altstadt and accessible via the #55 bus from the train station, Mirabellplatz or Rudolfskai. The Italianate palace was built by Santino Solari between 1613 and 1619 to serve as the suburban pleasure villa and hunting lodge of the urbane Archbishop Marcus Sitticus, who commissioned the job immediately on his accession to the archiepiscopal throne. Bus #55 continues to St Leonhard just beyond the city's southern suburbs, starting point for the cable-car ascent of the Untersberg , an impressively craggy height renowned for its expansive views. On the road to the Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall, Salzburger Land's excellent Open-Air Museum lies 12km to the southwest of Salzburg. You can escape to the museum by bus or cycle - there's a separate cycle path by the side of the road once you leave suburban Salzburg.
