Round the corner from the Haus der Natur, at Museumsplatz 1, is the city's main historical museum, the Museum Carolino-Augusteum (July-Sept Tues-Sun 10am-6pm, Thur until 8pm; Oct-June Tues-Sun 9am-5pm; oS40/?2.91), although it's due to move to new premises on the Mozartplatz. An excellent place to catch up on the history of Roman-era Salzburg, or Juvavum, its wide range of finds include a number of mosaics (the best, a third-century piece found just east of Mozartplatz depicting Europa's abduction) and the fragmentary remains of a Roman water clock decorated with figures of Andromeda and Perseus. Upstairs are a small folklore section and several dull paintings, and a room devoted to local-born Hans Makart, history painter and society portraitist whose works reflected the stuffy conventions of the late-nineteenth-century bourgeoisie. Considerably more interesting are the Gothic wood-sculptures and altar fragments nearby, with a winged altar from the Pinzgau village of Rauris (featuring a relief of the Pieta , flanked by panels depicting ss Margaret, Catharine, Dorothy and Barbara) the best of a generally stunning bunch. The next floor up concentrates on Baroque paintings, with the Beheading of Saint Barbara (1727) the most notable of a grippingly dramatic trio of works by Paul Troger. Some reconstructed sixteenth-century interiors display a wealth of intricately inlaid wood surfaces, and there's also a delightfully odd eighteenth-century Spottofen (literally "oven of scorn"), a ceramic stove designed - no doubt with a pious Catholic household in mind - in the shape of a library filled with books fit for burning, the works of Luther, Calvin and Zwingli among them. Finally, Salzburg's musical heritage is reflected in a display of ancient musical instruments, and there's a nearby CD player (you can programme your own choices) on which you can listen to examples of them in action.
