Salzburg's natural history collection, in the Haus der Natur (daily 9am-5pm; oS55/?4.00), a few steps north of the Burgerspital on Museumsplatz, has a lot to marvel at. Five excellently arranged exhibition floors make this one of the city's more fun-filled attractions, a welcome breather from the rather culture-heavy sights on offer elsewhere. Downstairs, the requisite moving dinosaur models (with accompanying sound effects) are joined by fascinating, if incongruous, dioramas detailing life in Tibet, and an aquarium inhabited by piranhas and Red Sea sharks, amongst others. Upstairs floors offer an endless parade of stuffed fauna of all kinds, including one section on "animal bastards" - rare cross-breeds such as a tiger-lion, and the cubs of mixed brown and polar bear parents - and one glass case labelled "yeti" which is filled with theatrical dry ice. The Reptilienzoo contains live snakes and alligators, and a section on space travel features the capsule of an American Mercury rocket.
