Salzburg's Altstadt represents one of the best examples of Baroque town planning anywhere in Europe. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich was responsible for initiating the city's transformation, engaging Venetian Vincenzo Scamozzi to draft plans for an ensemble of fountains, squares and public buildings centred on a brand-new cathedral, the building of which was made neccesary by the destruction of the previous church by fire in 1598. Even though the archbishop never lived to see its completion (he was deposed in 1612), the cityscape that greets you is still very much Scamozzi's.
