Mountain Transport
It's highly likely that at some point during your stay, you'll use transport to help you get to the top of a mountain quickly. A remarkable number of Austrian summits can be accessed by public transport, and the view from the top is invariably superb. You'll come across the Standseilbahn , or funicular railway and Zahnradbahn or cog railway in some resorts. In addition, there are various types of lift: Seilbahn , or single-cabin cable car , the Gondelbahn , or gondola (a succession of smaller cabins suspended from the same cable), and the Sesselbahn , or chairlift . The rudimentary Schlepplift or T-bar lift is only used during the ski season. Fares on these journeys vary enormously depending on the height to which you're climbing. Discounts are sometimes available if you hold a Gastepass or some kind of travel pass. Invariably, the ascent ( Bergfahrt ) is more expensive than the descent ( Talfahrt ), and a return is cheaper than the sum of the two. If you're here in the ski season, you'll need to buy a ski pass to get the best value.
