Just beyond San Carlos, 96km west of Panama City, a side road climbs up into the cordillera to EL VALLE , a small village set in an idyllic fertile valley that was once the crater of a volcano, now long extinct. At 600m above sea-level, El Valle is comparatively cool, and the surrounding countryside is good for walking or horse-riding. The area is renowned for its flowers and orchids , and is a popular retreat for residents of Panama City at the weekend, when it gets very busy. Otherwise it's a peaceful place, where most people get around by bicycle or on horseback and the only noise is of lawnmowers and of hummingbirds buzzing among the flowers.
