From Panama City the Interamericana crosses the Bridge of the Americas, which soars 1600m across the mouth of the canal, and passes through the satellite town of La Chorrera as it heads west towards the province of Cocle. For 50km beyond the village of Bejuco, 29km west of La Chorrera, the coast is lined with some of the most beautiful and popular Pacific beaches in Panama, all just a few kilometres from the highway and accessible by taxi or local buses. From east to west Playas Gorgona and Coronado are the most fashionable weekend destinations for the wealthy residents of Panama City, while Playa San Carlos is the most popular with surfers. Playa Santa Clara , 30km east of Penonome, is probably the loveliest - a seemingly endless stretch of white sand lapped by usually calm waters. There's a restaurant , Las Veraneras (daily 10am-7.30pm), which serves decent fish and seafood, and locals rent horses close by. They also have four delightful self-catering cabanas overlooking the sea, Cabanas Veraneras (tel 993 3313; US$40-60), which sleep up to five, though if you eat at the restaurant they won't mind if you camp on the beach.
