Practicalities
Buses from Panama City arrive at the Shell station a few blocks from the square, while those from Chitre pull in to the Parque Porras. For the moment the only place to stay is the Hotel Zafiro (tel 994 8200; US$15-25) on Parque Porras, which has modern rooms with a/c and TV plus a balcony overlooking the square that makes it good, though noisy, at fiesta time, when prices go up. If you want to come here for carnaval you're better off staying in Chitre, though even there accommodation is booked up well in advance. There are several basic restaurants on and around the square: Los Portales , one block up Av B. Porras, is the most popular, while the Jardin Praga opposite is also good, and has a massive dance hall that is the centre of things on Friday and Saturday nights. For Internet access try the Cafe Internet Las Tablas (Mon-Sat 9am-6pm) on Av B. Porras. Banks include the Banco del Istmo on the square and the BBVA one block away on Av B. Porras. If you're heading into Cerro Hoya from this side of the peninsula you should get information and permission from ANAM (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm; tel 994 7313) on the outskirts of town on the road to Pedasi; you don't need permission to visit Isla Iguana and Isla Canas. Moving on from Las Tablas, buses for Pedasi (hourly; 45min) and Tonosi (hourly; 2hr 30min) leave from the square or Av B. Porras.
