Practicalities
To reach Isla Canas take a bus heading for the village of Canas from Pedasi or Tonosi and tell the driver you want to go to the island - the port is down a side road a few kilometres from the village but buses go there on request. Canoes wait at the port to take people to the island (US$0.5 per person) through channels cut in the mangroves, though at low tide you may have to wade through mud to reach it. Once on the island you should head for the ANAM office (tel 995 8002) to pay the US$3 visitors' charge and get information. The cooperative that manages the turtles - the Cooperativa Islenos Unidos - has three rustic but clean cabanas (US$5-10) with outside bath and mosquito nets. The latter are absolutely essential, as is insect repellent. The cooperative also has a small restaurant , though you should let them know in advance if you want to eat, and for a small tip (a few dollars should suffice) they will assign a member to take you out on the beach at night to see the turtles - they may even let you eat an egg or two, freshly laid and still warm. Buses to Pedasi (1-2 daily; 2hr) and Tonosi (1 daily; 1hr) from Canas usually come down to the port to collect passengers.
