Practicalities
Buses from Panama City pull in at the terminal on the outskirts of town, about ten minutes' walk from the centre. The IPAT office for the entire peninsula is in neighbouring Los Santos. The best hotel is the Rex (tel 996 4310, fax 996 4310; US$15-25) on Parque Union, which has comfortable rooms with TV and a/c. The Hotel El Prado (tel 996 4620 or 996 6859; US$10-15), on Av Herrera near the cathedral, and the Hotel Santa Rita (tel 996 4610, fax 996 2404; US$10-15), just around the corner on C Manuel Correa, are both similar, with small, clean rooms and a choice of fan or a/c; the former has a balcony overlooking the street which makes it a good place for watching fiestas. Of the town's many restaurants the best is the Meson del Rex , in the Rex hotel, its Spanish ownership evident in its red-checked tablecloths and excellent, reasonably priced cuisine. Also on the Parque, the open-air Restaurante Aire Libre has a limited menu but great breakfasts; while the self-service Restaurante Estrella #2 offers cheap and filling tipica meals. The Panaderia Chiquita on Av Herrera is good for cakes, sandwiches and huge pizzas. The Banco del Istmo is on the corner of C M. Correa and Av Perez. The post office (Mon-Fri 7am-6pm) is a block down Av Perez, and there's Internet access at Econoutiles (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 8am-4pm), a couple of blocks south of the Cathedral on Av Central. Moving on from Chitre, buses to Las Tablas, Santiago and to villages in the interior of the peninsula leave from the terminal , while buses to Los Santos (every 10min; 10min) can be flagged down at any of the stops on the main streets in town.
