From La Concepcion, the road to Cerro Punta winds up into the mountains through a lush valley with excellent views of the plain and the Golfo de Chiriqui before emerging at Hato de Volcan, usually known simply as VOLCAN , a small town set on a broad plateau at the foot of Volcan Baru. Spread out along the road with no real centre, Volcan is a resort in its own right, and there are some good trails in the surrounding hills, including one to the protected Chiriqui lakes. You're actually better off staying in Cerro Punta if you want to visit the Parque Nacional Volcan Baru, but if you do choose to stay in Volcan, the comfortable Motel California (tel 771 4272; US$15-25), a US-style motel with hot water, close to the crossroads, is the least expensive option, and there are several restaurants , and a Banco del Istmo on the main road.
