From Guadeloupe a partially paved road winds 6km up the western slope of Volcan Baru to Respingo , a park guard station at the entrance to Parque Nacional Volcan Baru , where the US$3 admission fee is rarely charged. There's no refuge, but you can camp. From Respingo the quetzal trail runs around the northern flank of the volcano to Boquete, a four- to six-hour hike, mostly downhill, through spectacular cloudforest. For the first hour or so the trail plunges down a steep valley and is difficult to follow, so you should get one of the park guards to guide you as far as a point known as La Victoria, beyond which the trail is easy to follow. It runs along the Rio Caldera and eventually becomes a track before emerging at Alto Chiquero , another park guard station. From here it's another hour's walk to the tarmac road above Boquete, where you can hitch or walk the last few kilometres into town - take a left turn when you reach the tarmac. Walking the trail in the other direction, from Boquete to Cerro Punta, involves some very steep climbs. The Boquete-based tour agency Expediciones Tierras Altas can arrange guides and transport to hike this trail, starting at either end.
