Cerro Punta Practicalities

Practicalities

Everything in Cerro Punta is spread out along the main road from David and a side road leading towards Parque Internacional La Amistad. Buses from David pull up on the one main street. There are a couple of places to stay : the Hotel Cerro Punta (tel 771 2020; US$25-40), on the main road, has clean, comfortable rooms with good views; while the friendly Pension Eterna Primavera (no phone; US$15-25), on the road towards La Amistad, has five overpriced and musty rooms. The newer Los Quetzales Lodge and Spa (tel 771 2182, fax 771 2226, www.losquetzales.com ; US$40-60), in the hamlet of Guadelupe , 3km north of Cerro Punta, has pleasant rooms in a chalet-like building and a cramped but clean dormitory (US$12 per person). They can also organize tours with horses and guides into the parks and have three wonderful self-catering cabanas in the cloudforest, where you can watch quetzals and up to ten different species of hummingbird from your balcony while you eat breakfast - an amazing experience, if a bit steep at about US$100 a night. All the above have hot water. All buses to and from Cerro Punta collect and drop off passengers in Guadelupe - just let the driver know that's where you want to go.

Punta has a reasonable restaurant with meals from about US$5, and there are several places in the village where you can get decent, inexpensive tipica meals and excellent batidos - creamy milkshakes made with local strawberries and blackberries. In Guadelupe, the bakery and pizzeria at Los Quetzales is better than the rather overpriced restaurant upstairs; better still is the nearby Refresceria La Canelita , which is good for coffee, snacks, seafood and chicken.
